Is There A Spiritual Care for Depression?

When such thoughts dominate the mind for extended periods, they alter the brain's physiology, becoming a leading cause of depression.The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 5% of the adult population suffers from depression. Symptoms include fatigue, insomnia, lack of focus, restlessness, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness.

While there are many causes of depression, the solution must be holistic. It should include yoga, a healthy diet, a balanced lifestyle, appropriate medical treatment, and counseling. From a spiritual perspective, negative thoughts can be eliminated by cultivating three key attitudes:

Instead of complaining, he thanked God, saying, "For all these years, You gave me oxygen to breathe without charging me a penny. Now I realize how precious every breath is."

In today's materialistic world, we often believe happiness lies in wealth and status, leading to a never-ending chase for more. This, in turn, causes misery. The key to overcoming this is to cultivate gratitude—count your many blessings, and you’ll see the world differently.

2. Faith in God's Protection

Depression often leads people to feel abandoned, but remembering that God is always watching over us brings immense peace. Consider the story of a little girl on a turbulent flight. While the passengers were in panic, she remained calm, playing her video game. After the plane landed, people commended her bravery, to which she calmly replied, "I knew nothing would happen to me because my father is the pilot, and he’s taking me home."

Similarly, when we have faith that our lives are guided by God's plans for our highest good, we can find comfort even in tough times. His protection is constant, and His compassion is always available.

3. The Power of Giving

People battling depression often focus on thoughts like, "People have wronged me," "Terrible things happen to me," or "Everyone is judging me." These thoughts revolve around the self—'I, me, and myself.' But what if we turned our focus outward, towards others?

Ratan Tata, when asked what brought him the most happiness, shared an insightful story. In his early years, he pursued wealth, luxury, and business success. But the moment that gave him the most joy came when he donated wheelchairs to children with disabilities. Initially, he intended to donate 200 chairs, but a friend insisted he personally visit the event. When he arrived, the children were thrilled. One child, before he left, caught his leg and said, "I want to remember your face so that when we meet in heaven, I’ll recognize you." Ratan Tata later reflected that the happiness he received in giving far surpassed anything he had experienced before.

Giving and focusing on others is a powerful antidote to depression.
