The Hidden Cause of Our Worries: How Attachment Breeds Stress and Anxiety
Introduction
Most of us find ourselves stressed or worrying all the time. Have you ever wondered why? The answer often lies in attachment. We're attached to that promotion, the next pay increment, exam result, or the outcome of a situation. The anticipation and waiting for these outcomes often lead to anxiety and stress. In this article, Swami Mukundananda describes how attachment can be a hidden cause of our worries and offer insights into breaking free from its grasp.
A Story of Surrender: The Deer and the Fawn
Once upon a time, in a dense forest, there was a pregnant deer. She stood near the side of a river, ready to give birth. However, danger loomed from all sides. A lion was crouching in the bushes, waiting to pounce on her. A hunter was aiming his bow, ready to release an arrow. A thunderstorm was brewing in the skies, and a forest fire was rapidly approaching. The deer felt trapped, overwhelmed by threats from all directions.
In her moment of despair, the deer made a crucial decision: to surrender. She decided to focus on giving birth, its primary duty and leaving the rest to fate. As she began to deliver her fawn, a loud thunderclap startled the hunter, causing him to misfire and shoot the lion instead. At the same moment, rain began to pour, quenching the forest fire. The deer and her fawn were safe, protected by the very forces that seemed threatening.
This story teaches us an important lesson: sometimes, we need to surrender and trust that things will work out. Like the deer, we often find ourselves surrounded by challenges and uncertainties. Issues, trauma, stress, anger of yesterday and anxiety of tomorrow. But if we've done our part diligently—whether it's our work, raising children, or any other responsibility—it's essential to have faith that the rest will fall into place. Letting go of the need to control every outcome can lead to a more peaceful and happy life.
